Perilla,a traditional Chinese herb, has been included in several authoritative Chinese pharmacopoeias. Perilla leaves are widely used in the food cultures of Korea and Japan, and to a lesser extent in Vietnam and India. Perilla seeds can often be used to extract perilla seed oil, which has a distinctive nutty aroma and flavour. There are well-established cultivation bases in both the north-eastern and north-western regions of China, and the α-linolenic acid content of perilla seed oil from the north-eastern region is generally higher than that from the north-western region.

Nutruoil®Perilla seed oil is a high α-linolenic acid content product from China, utilising core technology to preserve the high activity of α-linolenic acid during the extraction process.

Fatty acid composition

Nutruoil®Perilla seed oil is a high quality, nutritious cooking oil with the highest α-linolenic acid content. The fatty acid composition of perilla seed oil is relatively complex, with polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) making up 70.7% to 83.4% of the total, including palmitic acid (5.1-7.0%), stearic acid (1.1-2.3%),oleic acid (9.6-20.8%), linoleic acid (9.5-14.4%) and α-linolenic acid (58.8-70.9%).This oil ranks among the highest in α-linolenic acid content compared to other plant seed oils.

Traditionally, perilla seed oil has been utilized as an edible oil for the direct cooking of foods to balance the ω-6/ω-3 PUFA ratio in the diet, and as a functional ingredient in food products. Richtek perilla seed oil is used as a dietary supplement (softgels, microencapsulated powders, gummies) and is also used in cosmetics and skin care products. The recommended daily consumption of perilla seed oil should be kept within moderate limits, generally within 10 ml.
